I've had to use this as well. The best way I know of is to create the marriage and add the child. Once done then select the member of the family, click Edit > Marriage and check the box near the top left that says, "This couple did not marry". On reports it will now say "Jill had a relationship with Jack" instead of something like "Jill married Jack".
There is no real reason to worry over it being listed as a spouse within the application, so long as the report gets it right.
