Hi Paul,

Welcome. As Dermot says, Legacy doesn't work without the RINs. Legacy is a relational database and the RIN is one of hte essential links between the various tables. However, you can ignore them and they can operate completely in the background.

If you want Ahnentafel numbers, you'll need to add them to the User ID manually.

The User ID can be shown instead of the RIN on names and in the Name List and Index View. You don't need to customise one of the 5 fields in Family View as Dermot explains - though you may prefer that way.

Check Options > Customise for what number to show on names and the Options in the Name List and the Index View to change from RIN to UserID.

There are other ways to show Direct Line ancestors visually in Legacy and numbers can be added in Reports. After all they change depending on who the starting person is. Check out on the Tools menu Apply Ancestor colors and Set Direct Line as well as the Set Relationships. These can all have different starting people and do different but related things. To use Ancestor colours you need to enable that option in Options > Customise. To see the Direct line in the Child Lists you need to choose to show them bold in Options > Customise.

Have fun,
Cathy

Paul,
Welcome!! I don't think there's a way to do what you are asking for,
but can I ask, why would you want to do that? The RIN number is
automatically assigned by Legacy, in order, i.e., the first person you
enter to your Database is given RIN # 1, the second given # 2, and so
on, regardless of how they are related to each other. For Legacy
purposes, each person needs to have a RIN (to link the various parts
of the database together), but you can safely ignore it.

You have a couple of options to do what you want, firstly, you can
create an Ahnentafel report, which will show the numbers you want:
Choose Reports button from the main toolbar, then select the
Books/Other tab. From here, select the Ancestors button on the left
hand side. Play around with this a few times, by running previews, but
this should give you what you want.

If you wish to show the Ahnentafel numbers on screen regularly, you
can include it in the User ID field for each individual (I'm not aware
of any easy way to put this number in that field automatically, I
think it'd have to be done manually). Once you have the numbers
there, however, it's easy to show this on the family screen for each
individual. Click on the label Born on the family screen for one
individual, which will show you the "Customise family view
Information" window. Choose which of these places you wish to show the
User ID (I have it as the 5th field), Click the button with three dots
beside your preferred field, and scroll through the list presented
until you find "User ID". Select it, hit the select button, then click
close. Et voila!

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dermot.
