This is an interesting thread.  After doing a lot family genealogy we have 
found two families (who didn't know the other existed) where the girls are born 
deaf or very hard of hearing but the males hear.  Of course, we don't know if 
this is or is not genetically based.  

I think an offshoot of current genealogy research is its use as an unscientific 
tool through which one might discover, monitor and (perhaps) enable future 
generations to prevent or ameliorate some diseases.
