Claire,
I have tried adding different events for such situations; I have events called "Occupation (first)" and "Occupation (more)" because I want different sentence structures for the original occupation of my ancestor than I want for subsequent occupations, and can structure the sentences for the different situations. You could add an event called "Occupation (living)" and write the sentence the way you want to using a present tense; when the person retires or expires, you can change the event to another Occupation event with past tense sentences.
Hope this helps,
Peter
