Hi all,

Elizabeth Shown Mills in "Evidence Explained" uses established academic standards to source things but specifically applies them to genealogical sources of all types. In an academic career you won't meet many of these sources - like Gravestones, Family Group Sheets, Postcards, ...

A preponderance of her examples are drawn from the US and she certainly understands those sources better but she doesn't ignore the rest of the world and her suggestions should be considered and her principles followed for high standard sourcing.

The cheapest way to get her book is to get the PDF from footnote.com
I know that in preparing the Source Writer, Geoff has had a lot of contact with her and they are identified a number of errors in the book. I don't know whether a corrected version is yet available. The advantage of a PDF is that it sits on your computer and can be easily searched with the search in your PDF reader.

John,

According to other posts here from those who may know about such
things (Ron Ferguson, for e.g.) the book is pretty-much US-centric.

You can however purchase it (if you wish) from the legacy family tree
store (http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/?Click=1440), click the
"Software and Books" link in the menu on the left of screen, and the
first option on screen is to "Evidence Explained: Citing History
Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace". It costs USD71.95 including
shipping (or postage and packing as we say!) That is approx EUR46 or
GBP36.40).

There may be others on the list who will tell you more about whether
or not it is of much use for non-US sources, as I'm not necessarily
the best sourcer! The source writer on deluxe version of Legacy v7,
however, will help create these sources to this standard if you
require that, or you can ignore the source writer, and override with
your own preferred options, if you like.

Regards,

Dermot.
