I don't think it is my PC

I have a pentium 4 with 1gig memory xp pro
I ran ccleaner and regvac then did a fresh boot and only started Legacy 7.
I don't have much running in memory: firewall, virus scanner and allchars

The initial relationship calculator screen came up within a minute. I have changed the settings to 3 blood and no non-blood

I selected a new person on the left to calculate to the same person who displayed on the right.
11 minutes later the three relationships displayed
I have 98829 individuals in my database

I found where changing the calculation defaults are located and agree that setting/resetting the defaults for the relationship calculator would be better placed in the calculator window.

I did not time the setting relationships, but as Art wrote, it is a time consuming event, but it was in version 6 also.

FYI
Mine too comes up with the "preferred" person set on the left and the highlighted person on the right. I hadn't even realized this. I consider it a plus, since I probably will want one of those two in my calculation whenever I open it. No difference to me if it is blank or has a name that I'm gonna change to someone else, but at least one of the two will probably already be set to who I want.

Mine comes up almost instantaneously, and calculates pretty fast (just a few seconds, takes a few seconds longer if I change from the defaults). But then I don't have very many people in my database yet (only about 1500 - wow, didn't even realize it was even that many!)

To change the default, you need to use: Tools / Set Relationships If you change the numbers on this screen, the defaults on the relationship calculator change also. Not real intuitive (I'd like to see it included on one of the OPTIONS tabs, or have a button on the Relationship Calculator that said something to the effect of "Make these limits the new default").

The only thing I have running at the time is:
Legacy
Outlook
A TV emulator
A web browser (IE)
some utilities in my system tray
I'm using a 3 GHz Pentium D processor with 2 gigs of memory, with Windows XP Pro.

Maybe this could be a good justification to upgrade your system??? ha ha ha Actually, I'd look elsewhere before I thought about replacing the entire system. Things like: what else is running, is it better if I do it after a fresh boot, can I just add more memory, is my harddrive almost full (and thus the "swap file" is having to dig for a place to reside), etc. I wouldn't think this would be impacted by a disk defrag since it seems to be 100% in memory. Might want to do a full anti-virus and spyware scan - maybe you've got something that is hogging resources??

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] V7 Relationship Calculator

Just some additional information on the relationship calculator. It takes about 2-3 minutes to open the relationship calculator. It does not work as described in the help file. The help file leads one to believe that the calculator opens with a blank field in the right hand position. This is not correct. The left person is the starting/root person in the database and the right window contains the highlighted person in the family view. When i installed the deluxe version it asked about the number of blood and non-blood relationships that I wished to display. I selected 5 for blood and 2 for non-blood. As far as I can tell, there is no way to change this. I have changed it on the screen, but when I reopen the calculator, the original number remains. Having a way to change this would be nice.

In my database, if I select swap it took 14 minutes to display the relationship with the same two people only changing right and left positions. The relationships remained the same

Perhaps I have missed something, but why do I have to display the relationship calculator for the starting person and not two individuals of my choosing as was the case with all previous versions of the relationship calculator. I use the family view where the closest relationship already displays for the starting person, I generally want the calculator for two different people. Having to wait close to 15 minutes or more to see the relationship or not is an absurd amount of time.

On a positive note, I am delighted that half relationships are not working. I have a number of half great aunts/uncles who married distant cousins where their offspring are now finally displaying based on the half relationship instead of the far more distant whole relationship. Thank you!

Hi Mike,

No work around. I've been reporting this for months and Dave had hoped to fix it before release but it obviously didn't get done. Some will report as halfs and some of the halfs report as steps and as you say, others lose the half altogether and report as full.

Has anyone tried the relationship calculator in V7 and checked there half cousins, aunts, uncles etc afterwards. All of my half relations are now missing the leading half. Example would be Half 1st cousin twice removed now only says 1st cousin twice removed. I reported this to support on Wednesday but have not received a response (I'm sure that they are very busy now). If
anyone has experienced this, have you found a workaround?

Thanks,
Mike
