Because some email programs determine threading based on information held in the headers about which email you're replying to, rather than by the subject line. This means that when someone replies to a post and changes the subject line, it is still threaded with the old conversation.

It is very simple to save the list address - LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com - in your address book (indicate that all emails to this address should be in plain text, if your email program works that way), and then when you want to ask a new question *start a new email* to ask it.

*Don't* piggy-back off someone else's post that is discussing something different.

Do this each time, and you won't upset those people who are affected by this threading.

Posting to a list - any list - is no different to writing to a friend. Start a new email, address it to where you want to go, insert a meaningful subject line, and write what you want to say.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

Why is the below "bad"? Actually, I try to remember to:
hit reply
change subject
delete unrelated info in body of the msg
If you want to start a new topic you should *not* just hit Reply and change the subject line but should start a new thread with a new e-mail.
