I used to be an FTM user before I switched to Legacy. On the newsgroups
I read at that time there were many posts about how FTM would "steal"
the GEDCOM file association each time it was run. I used this method to
outwit FTM then and it should still apply.
Open Windows Explorer
Click on Tools and Select Folder Options
Select the File Types Tab
Scroll down until you find the GED extension and click on it
Click the Advanced Button
On there you can change the name to GEDCOM File if you wish and if you
no longer have FTM installed. If you still have and use FTM however the
next time you run FTM it will be changed back to FTW GEDCOM File
In the edit window you will see a list of actions. Open is the only choice.
Click Add
In the next window Give the action the name "Edit"
Click on the Browse button beside the Application line and browse to the
Windows Folder. Select Notepad.exe as the application. (A GEDCOM is just
a plain text file with a special format for the text that genealogy
programs understand.)
Click OK
There will now be two actions, select Edit and click the set Default button.
Now when you are looking at files and see a GEDCOM file in the list
If you right click on the file you will see Edit as the first option.
Double clicking on the file will now also open the file with Notepad.exe
instead of FTM.
I do not suggest selecting Legacy as the default program to open a
GEDCOM file. You will be able to start Legacy if you do so but Legacy
will want to import the GEDCOM file, into a new .fdb file, it will not
allow you to examine the contents of the GEDCOM file. Using Notepad.exe
will let you examine the contents of the GEDCOM as text.

I'd never noticed this before but just tried it and same thing happens
to me. (I still have FTM installed because I have some extra files
that haven't been transferred to Legacy yet.) I don't think it's much
of a problem, there's probably some setting in FTM that is "owning"
all gedcoms. If you want to open it with Legacy, you can open the
properties on the GedCom and change the "opens with" program to Legacy
or right click on the file and select open with Legacy or open Legacy
1st and import it there.

This seems to be a strange problem. Let me preface this by saying that up
until about two years ago I used FTM then switched to Legacy. I'm running the
updated Legacy 7 Deluxe. I've made a gedcom using a focus group, named it and
saved it to my desktop as a gedcom. Problem is: it ends up a FTWgedcom which
is a Family Tree Maker gedcom. When I open it my old FTM opening screen comes
up and asks for a new file name.
I want to check this gedcom then upload it to ancestry.com and/or send it to a
couple of people in my family but now I don't know what I can do.
I used FTM up until about two years ago when I switched over to Legacy. Anyone
have any ideas how I can fix this?
