When I don't have a handwritten date in for the census then I use the official 
date.  This usually only happens on the very early censuses.  On the later 
census if the page doesn't have a date if you look at the previous page or 
maybe one more before that (or one after) you will find the date you need.

  AH..but in 1900 the date of the census is 1 June 1900 and the census in 1910 
is the 15 April 1910 and 1920 is 1 January 1920 and 1930 is 1 April 1930 
therefore the date is important because if they moved one month later you now 
would have a different event date.  Maybe in a high percentage of cases it 
would not make a difference but there are times when you discover migration it 
is good to have the correct and total date to make the story of that person
