Don't know if this applies or not, or even if there is a connection
here, but about a couple of weeks ago I began to have problems with
printing, flash drive errors, and malfunction errors for anything
connected to my USB ports. It started right after a automatic update
of Windows XP and since that was the only thing that had changed on my
system, I feel that has been the problem. My external hard drive is
connected via USB and it continued to work fine, so that eliminated a
USB port failure.
Anyway, just thought I would pass this along as updates (Windows,
anti-virus, etc.) can sometimes be the culprit of problems.
I allowed Win XP to upgrade to SP3 and it was a disaster for nearly
everything USB. One or 2 things connected via USB continued to work,
but most (including modem, which was a bit of a disaster) didn't and
plugging any one of them rendered the computer unusable. The tech guy
couldn't sort the problem and in the end had to resort to disabling all
USB ports on the motherboard and installing a 4-port USB PCI card.
