Thanks to everyone who answered my post so quickly and offered great advice. Elizabeth and others, I understand your caution against using surname in the master source list. The reason I considered that was due to the training CD Legacy's Ultimate Guide to Sources, in which Mr. Rasmussen suggests using reverse locality for naming most of his sources in the master source list (for sorting purposes) and surnames for others. He just didn't cover maiden names. Thanks again. Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: Dave Williams To: LegacyUserGroup Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 9:41 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Naming Convention I am new to this user group and fairly new to genealogy in general, and I want to start out on the right foot. I know that women entered into family group records should be entered under their maiden names. But how do you handle sources, events and such after their name changes in marriage? Case in point, my mother. Her maiden name was Shirley Akers. Her name became Shirley Williams when she married. I entered her on the family group sheet as Akers. But many of the events in her later life, as well as many of her letters, published articles and e-mails that I have as sources, are under the name of Williams. I'm thinking I would cite sources just like anyone else, but put the master source name under Akers. Any suggestions? I'm a bit confused on this point. Thanks in advance for advice. I'm looking forward to learning from this group.
