Marlene, I use the UserID field for this; it holds up to 20 characters. Then, on the NAME list, select Options and select "Show User ID# in List". Then you can position your mouse in the "#" field at the top -- and by clicking once at a time it will toggle the sort ascending and descending by User Id order.
I have something similar where the main father in 1500's was named "William" who had 4 sons named Thomas, William, John, and Edmond. All four boys named their four sons each with those four names -- and this continued until 1862!! It took me over 5 years to finally get some sort of valid dates. The ones that are still pending continue to have information in the User ID field. In all of the reporting and charting the user is given options to either use the RIN, User ID, or none. Hope this helps. Since I seldom print information except for myself and no one views my files, I have elected to add whatever is necessary to make it easier for me to work with. Then, if I do need to print reports for whomever, I copy the database to "another name file". That keeps me from pulling my hair out. Good luck in your continued research. I don't print information very often and the ability to customise the reports allows the exclusion of the extra info, so I have decided to use the Est Year option to see how it works.
