The yahoo genealogy groups I belong to handle this pretty well, with the digest view as one option, individual emails as the other. Within the digest, each message has reply options that include reply to sender, reply to list, and reply via webpost. And I get one per day that I can scan (the subject lines of the posts listed at the top of the digest), instead of dozens of emails on some days that I have to delete as with the LUG list.

People don't know how to reply to them. So they quote the whole message in their reply and forget to change the Subject. Also, a lot of email software doesn't 'know' how to properly handle a Message Digest i.e. how to navigate through it, message by message.
