Hi Stan, You will likely get lots of different replies to this problem, when I have unknow parents I use a ? for the given name and also for the surname, a lot of researchers do not like this, but its what I choose to use.
As there is no immediate fix in the works, you will have to try to come up with a compromise that will work for you and that you are happy with. If you have two known brothers, Frank and Robert Smith, but you do not know their parents names, you are quite safe in deducing that their father's surname is Smith. Have you considered entering their father's name as (given name (Mr.) and surname (Smith); now enter Mr. Smith's wife as give name (Mrs.) and surname (Smith), without the ( ). You can also give Mrs. Smith an AKA as Unknown, Unknown or ? ?, at least until you learn their correct names. You can play with your own combination until you find a solution that will satisfy you. Myself I would not unlink, if you do unlink make sure that you do a backup first just incase there are siblings that may become disconnected.
