Mike, As I tried to explain, there is a difference in Legacy and that Legacy *must* create a blank/unknown record for a spouse/partner if a child is entered. You comparison with clicking a cell in Excel is, therefore, in my opinion invalid.
Any change to prevent a record being created on clicking the Save button, must not override an essential record created because of the existence of a child. So what is really required is an instruction such as "don't change the current status".
