It's called a source! If the message is in the form of an email then I use
the email source and I attach an image of the message to the source. If it's
a tree then the source is the tree which you have downloaded from where
ever. You can add the names of the individuals into the source detail.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Storing details of contacts

When I make a contact through Ancestry, GenesReunited etc I usually paste
the message into the Notes for the Individual in my tree that the contact
asked about (or I originated to query about). It can get difficult to
remember who has contacted me about who. I have thought of starting to use
ToDo as a way of storing the information because they can all be listed.

What I would really like is some sort of note that can be attached to all
the ancestors of an Individual so I could quickly see any contacts who have
the common ancestor. I would need to be able to edit this so I could removed
some Individuals and add to others if I got further information.
