Deb,

I am not at all clear what you mean, so I will content myself with
explaining the process which may help you see what is happening. When
you create a Family File this has the extension .fdb. Whenever you add
or edit your data, you are making changes to this file, Legacy
automatically saves you changes on the fly ie. as you do them, or more
accurately, whenever you click a Save button.

Backing up is something which you do as a separate operation, either
when you exit the program, or by using File>Backup, or by using the
Icon on the Toolbar. This file is a zip file, and in common with all
zip files is read only.

These processes are not dependant on where you store the two files in
your set up.
