I would not worry much about "usual practice" in this case:  use Legacy the way 
it most makes sense to you.  Legacy gives us lots of options for a reason.

I, for example, rarely use the Text/Comments tab on Source Detail for 
transcriptions *of* the source.  I use it for Comments *about* the source.

I put the transcriptions in the Event Notes.  I want the information about the 
person with the person, not buried in footnotes or endnotes.

As for where to source the father - son relationship, I tend to do it with the 
Name field, but you could create an Event for that purpose if you wish.
