Bob, If the install.log file is missing then Legacy will not uninstall. I suggest that you copy your files and USR files to some safe place (you seem to do this anyhow) and do a full install from the Legacy website on top of your current installation ( i.e. don't uninstall first). Hopefully this will give you the install.log file. You can then uninstall and reinstall.
I have seen reports which say that this does not always work! I tried to uninstall Legacy, but the line is still in the Control Panel after the uninstall works its way. Then if I click on the Legacy 7.4 again, which I have used since May 2010, it states that 'unable to find Install.log'. I've installed and uninstalled a number of times, but th eline in the COntrol panel remains no matter what I have done. I tried to restore from backup, but keep getting the same warning about 'installing an unknown program'. I'm using Windows 7 as a Virtual Machine (Fusion) on my iMAC and it has worked for over a year now without a problem. Your question - 'Moving Legacy files around or renaming a folder?' - I do save my .fdb files to an external hard drive as well as a 'flash drive' I carry with me and sometimes rename 'Docs' before saving a new copy of 'Docs' - have not had any issues with that before.
