Listmembers: Recently I have decided to switch from a Dutch genealogy-program called 'Aldfaer' to Legacy. The main reason for this was the fact that Aldfaer doesn't have a proper source system, which has prevented me from making any serious efforts in this area. Furthermore it lacks a feature to locate and merge duplicates.
Besides my personal file containing my own family history, I'm also interested in European nobility and mostly royalty. I have located quite some information and now want to turn all this information into a proper genealogy file in Legacy. There are a couple of issues that I want to figure out before starting work on it. * What do I use as the last name? If no last name can be identified, what do I enter? * What is the proper way to handle sequence numbers such as Henry VIII? Do I enter these as part of the name, or handle them differently and if so, how. * What is the proper way to handle name variations due to language. The aforementioned Henry VIII is called Hendrik VIII in Dutch and Heinrich VIII in German. Should I decide on a language to use in advance and stick to that? * What is the proper way to handle royal and noble titles? Some titles are 'time-limited'. Some of the English titles only transfer from father to eldest son upon the death of the father. So should these be entered as special attributes with a FROM <start-date> TO <end-date>? Are there any other suggestions you can do for this type of file? Of course I can invent my own personal standard for building my file, but I'm trying to stick to best practices that are in general use among genealogists. -- Greetings, Maurice Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
