There are a few ways. One, if you have a mother with no father attached, and simply create a child, no RIN will be assigned to the unknown father. An MRIN will be, which is unavoidable.
Two, if you create a unlinked child and then link it to a mother only, the child will attach to the mother only. Again, if the mother has no existing husband, none wil be created and thus no RIN, but as above, an MRIN will be (mother + "unknown").
