I had started off with FTM over 10 years ago and even beta tested a couple of
versions for them. I dumped FTM over a year ago because FTM reports are so
limited and there’s no way to customize anything. I’d like to add certain
features like the events and even photos, but we are left with few choices.
FTM does have some nice features like linking people with photos, sources, and
citations all in one place with very little effort.

I had only dabbled with Legacy for a couple of years before switching, but
because I was so used to FTM and The Master Genealogist I was hesitant to
switch (teaching-an-old-dog-new-tricks syndrome). I had restructured
everything in FTM and it was just the way I wanted it and I dreaded exporting
only to a GEDCOM. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it can be quickly
overcome and I’ve gotten a lot of good help from this list.

I suggest that you try the Legacy free version which has a lot of features that
the others don’t. I would also keep using FTM as well until you get used to
Legacy. I did this for years with FTM and TMG until I got tired of duplicating
efforts when adding data to both. I know its cumbersome, but I strongly
recommend it for any genealogy software in case you decide you hate the one you
want to switch to.

Once you start adding new research to your new file, it’s difficult to remember
what was done if you have to go back to the old program. For this reason, I
started saving a text file containing the information that was added and name
it with the date it was done. Since I only use Legacy, this practice is still
useful for reviewing later in case I have to revisit those names again for
further research.

I wish I had started with Legacy years before I did because it is much more
flexible. As far as searching, I believe you can search for just about
anything. You will find much more flexibility and it is what I consider a real
genealogy program for serious researchers. The other ones are just toys. Some
people might remember that when FTM kept changing ownership, at one time it was
owned by a well-known toy company.

I’m looking forward to the FamilySearch data being available to all within
Legacy because I am finding much more data at their site than I ever have with
Ancestry.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy Deluxe 7 features?

I have used 3 different versions of Family Tree Maker for over 13 years, the
latest being about 6 years old. I bought a laptop with Windows 7 and noticed
that my latest version could not be used so I bought Family Tree Maker 2010 and
really hate it. It took some time getting used to do some things I used to
easily but the main problems are:

1.the inability to share my "reports" (I used to at least be able to create in
the program and copy and paste),

2. the inability to find an individual in the file searching through all text
fields (I have a lot of information in the "events" (facts) fields but they are
not searchable at once nor is the "notes" searchable at all)

3. the inability to have "events" (facts) contents included in my reports,

4. and the data in my gedcom files now created and posted on my Rootsweb page
is there but is jumbled up (it looks okay in the program but not on the
internet).

I have over 13,000 individuals in my file and over 750 pictures. I wish I could
go back but I have made many additions since I upgraded last summer.

I am thinking of trying Legacy Deluxe 7 because at least I could create pdf
files- that would take care of problem 1. I know any import will have to be in
gedcom format and my pictures will not be linked to anything.

Can anyone tell me if Legacy Deluxe 7 would solve problems 2 and 3?

Thanks,

Linda
