It actually hasn't been like this for years, ever since variable spaced type fonts. Typewriters were monospaced. Today's computers leave the correct amount of space so you shouldn't double space after periods, etc. http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/spaces-period-end-of-sentence.aspx
