Joan, it does it for me and I agree with you.  That would be a
no-brainer in programming logic.  But it works perfectly for me, both
when I used the "regular" name index and when I create a search list.
Identical names are sorted in birth date order.

Do you think it could be something in the customize options?  Weird...
