FTM are one of the big players and they provide import routine for "Legacy" and
"The Master Genealogist" as well as their own, Gedcom and PAF. I think
self-interest by the big players will go that route rather than uprate gedcom.
Incidentally FTM when using the Legacy Import does not translate Sourewriter
sources from Legacy properly.

Laura,

I wouldn't hold my breath. The organisers/designers admit it is a long term
project and is certainly far from new already.

Mike is quite correct, it will not be of much use unless the big players
incorporate it into their software - and arguably their use of propriety
tags is in their own self-interest, as it makes it more difficult for people
to switch from one database program to another.

There are people working on a solution to this problem. Check out the
following

URL :http://bettergedcom.wikispaces.com/
TITLE : BetterGedcom - Build a Better GEDCOM Project
DESCRIPTION : The organizers of BetterGEDCOM are members of the genealogy
user community not affiliated with any particular genealogical organization
and not advocating for any particular constituency except the end-users. The
goal is to define a standard that is meant to replace the current GEDCOM
standard for both the communication of and the long term storage of
genealogical information.
