You probably are correct, I only see "lf.jpg" instead of a .pdf file in the 
multimedialist. So a pdf-file probably cannot be changed globally. That's bad 
because I have a lot of pdf-files connected to a lot of individuals :-(.

It might be easier to rename the file in Picture Center. From the Help:

Rename

You can change the name of the currently highlight file in the Picture File 
name List by clicking the Rename button.  The file is then renamed on disk.
If the file has a + in the U column, any links to this picture within your 
family file are also renamed to match the change you made

So just rename the extension of the file from pdf to jpg and after you have 
done this replace the renamed pdf-file with the jpg-file.

Each source detail is a separate reference to the multimedia file.
Therefore, you have to change each reference separately.
