I have noticed that a lot of people model relatives of spouses as individuals in their tree. I can see where this might prove helpful when you find a distant cousin who descends from that line. My own (perhaps selfish) approach is to not model them but to mention them in the general notes for that spouse. That way the information does appear in descendant reports, and the clues and sources are there for someone who wants to do further research.
