I do something similar, but put the approximate years in parentheses, like so: Carmel, Dutchess, Province of New York (1664-1776)
This way, I can see at a glance whether I have the right place name for the time frame. In the notes field, I remark on the evolution of the place, like so: "Carmel is now located in Putnam County, NY." Massachusetts is always fun to deal with!
