Since all my ancestors are from the deep south I decided to help solve the problems of names not being indexed as yet on the 1940 census. I volunteer with the LDS (no, not a member) to index. Yesterday I indexed a military base in Delaware for the census then did several other indexing projects. After you learn how to do it you can tell them what states you want to index and when they are uploaded they will let you know and you can start indexing your states.
Also, when you sign up to index they will "usually" give you access to the NFS. Try it, it is a lot of fun.
