Once you get two matching people in the pedigree view on both sides, you can drag and drop the "new" person on top of the "existing" person. It will then ask whether you want to include surrounding people.
Once you have done that it should suggest doing an auto merge. This will probably work in family view as well, but I tend to live in pedigree view. As everyone else says, don't do this until you have verified the data. Don't include surrounding people you haven't verified.
