Legacy allows you to create a new source with the same name as a
pre-existing source. (Apparently this field is not a primary key in the
underlying table.) It would be nice if Legacy gave you a warning before
committing the new name. Fortunately, when trying to cite one of these
sources, the panel that comes up also shows you what the citation will look
like, as soon as you click on one of the source name. So at least you can
tell the two apart. However, discovering the duplicate names should tell you
that something may be wrong with the way in which you are splitting your
information between the master and detail source records. If you are a
confirmed 'splitter', add more specifics to your source names. If you are
more of a 'lumper', then you have accidentally created a duplicate master
source that you don't need. There are many discussions in the LUG archive
about how people choose to split census citations.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Master Source LIst name - duplicates for US Census?

I discovered by accident that the "Master Source List" supports
duplicates. Here is my example in my Master Source List:

(1) Pennsylvania, Allegheny, Pittsburgh - 1930 - US Census
(2) Pennsylvania, Allegheny, Pittsburgh - 1930 - US Census

NOTE: (1) above is for ED 272 Page 16A and (2)
above is for ED 749 page 12B

I believe that I have followed the example as pictured in CD "Ultimate
Guide to Sources" but it does not feel right to have duplicate entries
in the "Master Source List".

What do you do if you find duplicate names in your Master Source List?

Best Regards,
Bill
