Well, yes, clicking on "Return Characters" does work-- I thought I had tried that and it hadn't worked but it did today. I now have 5 characters on the ribbon -- I added an 'e grave' but it wouldn't accept an 'e acute' until I had closed it and then went back later & there was no problem. So thank you for your help, JL!!
