   my direct line includes my own children, "set direct line" says nothing
    about ancestors.

To further expand on it when you navigate up the direct line ancestors then
the direct line children appear as you have selected.

Because they are not ancestors they are descendants. The set Direct Line as
Preferred only works on the ancestors of the person that you chose as the
person to set the line on.
