The problem is if you contact Dell you will get someone from India that you
can't understand, and they will be very short with you and rather impatient
with you also for your not understanding them. Been through the process 3
times in the last couple of months with a brand new W8 computer, I have had to
reinstall W8 twice, I'm actually getting pretty good at it.
If I might make another suggestion that I have not seen offered. I noticed you
mentioned that you installed Turbo Tax and Java(as a side note sometimes Java
causes problems), and you also installed Silverlight. I would suggest that you
do a restore back to before the problem started. That would probably be before
the other programs and other updates were added. Pick one that was at least a
week or 2 weeks prior to the creation of the problem. Then return and report
on the outcome. I am betting your problem in Java and Silverlight and
compatibility issues with the new version that was installed.
I would only do a reinstall of windows as a last resort, make sure you fully
understand what you are getting into and the implication that come with it. It
wipes out a lot of stuff and you end up starting from scratch in SOME
instances. By doing the restore it is much safer and you are picking the time
to go back to, if it doesn't look right just go back farther.
I am anxious to find out if this will work for you. It is a less drastic fix.

Barbara,

I wasn't thinking of Dell, rather a local geek! However you can check the
memory yourself - see:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer
 - and look near the bottom of the page for manual running.

See my response within (I hope that's allowed) in all caps to differentiate:

ABOVE ARE ALL THINGS I HAVE TRIED. I EVEN UNINSTALLED THE THREE PROGRAMS I HAVE
INSTALLED SINCE THE LAST TIME I USED LEGACY SUCCESSFULLY. STILL SAME ERROR. I
DISABLED MY ANTIVIRUS FOR A CLEAN INSTALL. SAME PROBLEM. REMEMBER ALSO, THAT I
HAVE USED THIS PROGRAM SUCCESSFULLY ON THIS COMPUTER.

MY COMPUTER IS A DELL XPS 64 GB THAT IS 9 MONTHS OLD. AS FAR AS I KNOW I AM NOT
HAVING OTHER PROBLEMS.

I USE MY COMPUTER NONSTOP EXCEPT THE LAST FEW DAYS WHEN I HAVE BEEN GONE A LOT,
AND EVEN HAD IT WITH ME ONE OF THOSE DAYS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS TO BE
WORKING.

IT JUST SEEMED PRETTY HOPELESS TO ME WHEN THE TECH SUPPORT GUY, LOOKING INTO MY
COMPUTER WITH GOTOASSIST SAID HE COULDN'T COME UP WITH ANYTHING. THEN WHEN HE
SAID THIS HAPPENS FAIRLY OFTEN BUT HE DIDN'T HAVE A LIST OF INCOMPATIBLES
ALREADY KNOWN, IT SEEMED LIKE THE WORST NEWS EVER.
