This is just my opinion.  You are right, it isn't an occupation so I wouldn't 
record it as an occupation event.  I would probably just put it in the notes.  
If I wanted to get this on his timeline, you could do a residence event and 
then add "John Doe was listed as a pauper on his daughter Jane Doe baptismal 
record."

I have an ancestor who married in 1777 and had 10 children between 1778 and 
1795. On only one baptism record (dated 1785) he was described as a pauper. 
This is obviously not an occupation (they are not recorded on the baptism 
register) so what is the best way of recording this information please?
