Or can I use the analogy? Cheryl Cheryl, Apologies for the slight delay in coming back to you - I have been away for a few days. As I understand it a Protectorate is rather different in that the relationship between the state and the mother country is much closer, with the mother country exercising some degree of control over the state. Whereas with the Crown Dependencies GB only takes responsibility for their defence, or to be more general their foreign policy. For example, the CI and IoM are not constituent states of the European Community, but are associated through their relationship with the UK.
