Jay,

I have to correct you on this answer.

The files in C:\Program Files x86\Legacy8\ are only for installing Legacy. A lot of the files are kept there only to give users a source to get a backup copy in the case that the running copy gets damaged or more importantly, to restore a default copy of some settings files.

The files in [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree are what are installed on your PC for the running of the program. All of the sub-folders there hold the files that are for the various GLOBAL settings during the running of Legacy.* *See below for exceptions.

The Family File Specific settings are in two places:

(1) [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\Data\

--> This is the default location for your Family Files and the Family File specific settings are embedded in the each Family File.

--> This and its associated \Media\ are what folks often move to a separate family files folder.

(2) [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_App_Data\Usr\Profile.dbm

--> This is file is a global file that holds the user's default customization settings, including the USER's default settings for all of the User's Global (gbl) and Family File (FF) specific settings.

The key concepts are:

Program Files - Install

[My Documents] Global Settings

Family File - Each family file's specific customizations settings.

ok?

John,Â

Please be specific here...

You are referring to C:\Program Files x86\Legacy8\_App_Data\Dictionaries\

Listers need to THINK when you see some of these paths

C:\Program Files x86\Legacy8\_App_Data\

are for GLOBAL settings

whereas items in

[My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_App_Data\

are specific per User (the MY in MY Documents)

This is something new to Legacy 8 and allows for better security within the Windows environment

It's a good improvement for the long run, just takes a short learning curve to get used to .

CE,
I believe this was answered already. The dictionaries are compatible.
You can copy your userdic-XX.tlx dictionary (XX being a language code) from your L7.x dictionary folder to the \_AppDate\Dictionaries\ folder for L8.
Dictionaries are Global, meaning that the same dictionary will be used for all of your family files.

Group,
Â
Are dictionaries from V7 [default folder] compatible with V8 and if so can they be copied across to C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy8\Dictionaries?
Â
Our L7 dictionaries contain numerous “Changeâ†and “Add†resulting ting from spell checking many thousands of events.
