Elizabeth, et al,

Backup twice every day.

Carbonite is a cloud service that is continually backing up when you are connected to the internet. I like it because if I am travelling or visiting friends with my PC, PC is getting backed up. I do not even have to think about it.

I also have a local hard drive backup with a hard drive called "Click Free". It also just operates in the background, but only when I am home. This gives me a backup that I can access to restore quickly. The Carbonite backup might take a while, over the internet, to restore large amounts of files.

Today, there are a lot of options to assure you do not lose your work.

Well, I only use Dropbox to share photos with friends and family and haven't come across Carbonite but I think I'll have a look at it.  I have a spare hard-drive but am not very good about backing up to it as I can never find what I want as it has a funny file structure.  I just hope if my computer dies I can work it out!  Reminder - back up TODAY.

Elizabeth,

That has to be your choice, depending on the dropbox space you have available.

Personally, I use Carbonite for my cloud backup as then I can structure my files where ever I choose to put them. I save dropbox space for sharing data with colleagues.

Thanks, John, will do.  Just re-opened Legacy having moved all to Dropbox and it's fine.  I have a large number of Census pages, baptism records, birth, marriage and death certificates etc. Would you suggest moving all the 'media' also to Dropbox?

Elizabeth, et al,
The .fdb file is your database. The others with the same name but different extensions are used internally for other functions. If you lose them the data can be re-generated, but best to keep them. If you are moving your family file to another folder, keep all of them together.

I have just tried to do that by changing the setting as you suggest and renaming the open Legacy file Hatchell Master Dec2013 but I now find I have 8 copies of that file, all with slightly different suffixes and lots of different dates going back to 22/02/2012. The first one is obviously the file I've just closed but the others are FG files, NC files, TC files etc.  Without listing them all, oone is labelled Hatchell Master Dec2013~Rc3.Rc3.
Does this sound OK to you?

I told Legacy where to find it in my settings.

Cheryl - does Legacy then find the file in Dropbox when you open  it?  I'm not ot totally sure where the default location of the working family file is held normally in Legacy*

I backup to the computer (which is then included in my other backup system) but the working file is in Dropbox.

Graham - if you keep your working file on Dropbox, is it quite simple to do?  Do you save a backup there every time youu close Legacy or is your whole file system on Dropbox? ÂšÂ  I use Dropbox to share files and photos with friends but not as a regular backup facility.  Do you recommend this?
