I do not know what you mean by uneditable. Give us more information on what you are doing, what type of media they are etc. What are you trying to edit, captions etc or something else?
I did some experiments and the red number indicates that there is a sound file linked to the picture. This is not explained in the help for the Media Gallery so I will input a problem to have the explanation added.
