I create a source for everything, even my thoughts or verbal info from someone.
Ex. Recently a cousin had a son, he's a month old. According to his father's Facebook posts his name is Gage. So I added him to my db and attached a source citation of FB. Yes, I know unorthodox, and certainly not proper, but I never follow the norm. Now, according to Gage's grandmother, his name is Bengy. She refuses to call him anything else. So I added that name to my file, and sourced it as "Verbal conversation" and details of my aunt. This gives me certainty that 50 years from now when someone takes my DB and work, or sees a report I have done, they know my sources and can decide surety for themselves. Granted if I ever got a better source (ie birth cert), I would add it and move verbals and FB stuff to notes. What I did was add a V for verified in Privacy brackets to the name until I was happy I had verified a particular branch and added reliable sources and then removed it. So John [[V]] - I guess I could have gone the other way and had John [[nv]] for not verified. An alternative is to dedicate a tag number to the task and remove the tag when you are happy. But your idea of using the Ancestral File Number field is quite a good one as it can be displayed on Family View if it hasn't actually been used for the AFN. Also maybe helpful. On the Assigned Sources screen for each person, if you are showing all events, you'll find source fields for relationship to father and relationship to mother. You may find them helpful. In the Search, you can search for people with missing sources - a variety of alternatives on which fields to look at. This may help you identify the people who need more work and once identified the search list can be tagged.
