I believe the best
practice is to identify the place using the name that was used AT THE
TIME. But then to insert a 'note' somewhere that gives the modern
name … and perhaps explains all the names the place has had over
the years (if you can do this … ). You could even note the
latitude and longitude in this note, if you are so inclined.

BTW, I highly
recommend the Windows software called Animap (www.goldbug.com)
for county boundary changes within the United States. Its terrific
software. I have no commercial connection with the software but I'm
a very satisfied user.

German Twp, Darke County, Ohio … that has been called Liberty Twp
since 1918 and with a wife from Cass County, Texas, that was known as
(Jeff) Davis County for a short time in the 1860s).

Subject: [LegacyUG] Data Entry.....
  Hello,
Is there a more “correct” way of entering data for a person
living during American Colonial times?
For example, a person living in York, Maine in 1661 wouldn’t technically be
correct. Would it be better
to enter, York, York County (even though the County probably didn’t exist
then), Maine, British Colonial/
North America? Certainly, the USA hadn’t been formed that early. .Any
suggestions how others of you might deal with this.
   Thanks for any advice/input.
