June,
To make it less confusing, simple turn off the ½ kids. Right click one of the
children in the children’s list and select VIEW then DEselect show ½ Kids. To
make double sure that the children are connected to the correct birth parents
just scroll through the spouses.

You CAN get all of the children to show on all of the screens but I recommend
that you don’t do this. Why? You want everyone hooked up via their correct
blood lines. You can easily see how everyone is related to everyone else by
simply flipping through the relationships. If you link the children to
multiple parents and then go in and designate their relationships to each of
these parents (bio, step) your reports are going to be jumbled and hard to read
and understand. Most genealogists are accustomed to reading reports of
bloodlines so if you send a report or file to another genealogist the first
thing they are going to do is unjumble what you did so that they can easily see
who the children’s bio parents are.

>From a practical standpoint you wouldn’t want to do this because if you want
>your file 100% consistent (which you should) you would have to do this for
>every single relationship where there are multiple marriages and you would
>have to designate bio, step for a whole lot of relationships. Your reports
>will not be easy to read.

The only time I have two sets of parents attached to a child is if it is a true
adoption situation. If a child was merely raised by the grandparents I do not
do this, again, for clarity’s sake. I simply put it in the notes that the
child was raised by the grandparents and I present my proof (census records,
school records, whatever).

Subject: [LegacyUG] Showing children

I hope I can explain this properly.

I have Mary French who married a William Mallet and had children with him. When
I look at the screen on Mary and William I see their two children as well as
two children that Mary had with a second husband Charles Cooper. – Charles and
Mary’s two children are shown as half.

If I change to the screen showing Mary and her second husband Charles – I see
Mary and Charles’s two children. I see the two children she had with William
shown as half. All correct. I also see 4 children that Charles had with his
first wife. These are also shown as half.

That is all ok.

What I cannot do though is to get these 4 children onto the screen for Mary and
William. I realise that they have no connection with William and that they have
no blood relationship to Mary. However given that they do intertwine in the
family I would like them to show but don’t know how to do this. My preferred
line to show is Mary and William as this is the direct line.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

June
