I have not looked at the issue now for a year. I believe that Darrin has now fixed one of the issues that required a mod, but I have not tested it yet with latest update.
As I remember, the mods dealt with
(a) preference setting for default media. Legacy's data model assumes that every media attachpoint can have a preferred media item. IE, you can have a default media item for a person, for each vital event, for each custom event.
If a person had a picture of the person, a headstone picture assigned to burial event, and a census image attached to a census event, when the Gedcom is imported the Headstone image was being assigned as the default image and displayed on the top of the getperson page for the person.
I believe that the mod forces the default image to be assign only to preferred media attached directly to an individual.
--> I believe the latest update fixes this in TNG.
(b) I believe that another mod facilitated which collection folder a new media item was assigned to.
(c) Another dealt with importing pdf files.
I am sorry to be so vague but I do not remember the details of work I did a year ago and cannot check the specifics right now. However, my focus was alerting Darrin to these issues to eliminate the need for mods when the issue was a difference in data model between Legacy and TNG, as he has done in at least one case.

John,
Could you give an example of a TNG mod that makes it easier to import legacy gedcoms? I couldn't find any on the wiki page:
http://tng.lythgoes.net/wiki/index.php/Category:Mods_for_TNG_v10
Also looked for gedcom in previous builds. Could you give a direct link?

- Stuart,
- You point out an import issue with TNG and
- webtrees. The product source for both is
- available for users to inspect and edit.
- As a programmer, early on I made a number of mods
- to TNG and soon discovered that I needed to spend
- too much time each new update to TNG to
- re-develop those mods for the new release.
- A couple of years ago, TNG introduced something
- they call the mod manager. This is a way to
- create a mod and then have TNG install it. There
- is now a large catalog of these mods available,
- most of which need to be tweaked each time an
- update is prepared. Some of these mods were
- developed specifically to make it easier to
- improve how Legacy Gedcoms are imported.
- Does webtrees have a similar facility?
- However, once you lock yourself into some of
- these mods, you may find that you will need help
- if the developer is no longer maintaining them.
