I've been chatting with Brian about this mailing list (I'm helping him and Ken with it at the moment), and suggested I post with this information to help anyone struggling with the lack of a digest here, and list mail "clogging up" the Inbox.

Whatever mail service you are using, there will be a feature - usually called a rule or a filter - that lets you do things to your mail as it comes in. For mailing lists, I like to have that mail taken out of my Inbox and 'put away' somewhere so that I can ignore it while I'm busy with other things, and can focus on it when I'm ready to read it. Here's how...

The filter is going to look for all mail addressed *TO* the mailing list. That's /LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com/ for the LUG, the address all list mail is sent to.

For mail programs that use folders, you'll want to set up a folder somewhere in your mailbox for "LUG" or "LegacyUG", or whatever name you want to give it. Direct the list mail to that folder.

This will work for any mailing list you subscribe to. Just alter the address used, and what you call the place it goes to to something meaningful for that list.

I've taken a screenshot of my own Thunderbird mailbox, which you can see here <https://www.dropbox.com/s/o646x2czpz6tamy/Screenshot%202016-02-25%2018.16.02.png?dl=0> (links to a Dropbox file, full link below); you'll see I've set up a folder for Genealogy under "Local Folders", and under Genealogy I have a folder for this mailing list. And my LUG filter is here <https://www.dropbox.com/s/gqw2w5cl1f96okp/Screenshot%202016-02-25%2018.38.49.png?dl=0> (Dropbox link, full URL below) if you want to see it.

Gmail (on their web site and apps) is a little different, in that it uses Labels instead of folders. They're a little like tags. Tell Gmail to apply a label (call it LUG or something useful) and skip the Inbox (archive it). (Set this up in a web browser via the Settings, and you'll find it carries through to any Gmail app you use on other devices.) See a screenshot of my LUG label at Gmail here <https://www.dropbox.com/s/zho3jnlaso3q4tm/Screenshot%202016-02-25%2018.29.11.png?dl=0> (another Dropbox link, full URL below) if you're interested.

You may have the option at this point to apply your new filter to existing mail. You may like to do that - it will pick up any old list mail that is still in the system.

Now your list mail is in its own folder, and any new mail will go there too, waiting for you to read it when you're ready for it, and out of the way when you're not. The posts you haven't yet read will be marked as unread, so you can always tell where you're up to.

Check out your service's Help for specific instructions. If you need further help, feel free to write to me _directly_ (ie, to wendy.how...@gmail.com, do NOT post to the list!) and tell me what program or service you're using, and I'll do my best to assist you.

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy
