David,

Are you talking about your data or the installation of the Program and the Settings file?

Legacy 8 installed by default to Program Files (x86)\Legacy8\
Legacy 9 installs by default to Program Files (x86)\Legacy9\ and removes the Legacy8 program folder.

You may have chosen to install Legacy 8 somewhere else but wherever it was installed, it used ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ folder for your settings and Legacy 9 uses this same folder. If you move or rename any part of \Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ it is simply recreated by Legacy using default settings the next time you open Legacy.

...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ also has folders for your Data and your Media but you don't have to use them. When you use another folder instead - like your C:\Legacy8\ folder then you should say that is where your data and/or your media is at Options - Customise 6.1 and 6.2 That way, especially with Media, Legacy will help you keep your media properly connected.

The good news is that if just your data and media are in your C:\Legacy8\ folder, you can rename it to \Legacy\ or \Legacy9\ and record that in 6.1 and 6.2. In addition, if that's where your data file is, you'll need to use the File - Open in Legacy to open your file the next time you open Legacy and Set Options - Customise 1.2 to open the file you want in the right folder (don't just see the filename and assume it's the one in the right folder).

Then you're set.

More information on finding Legacy files on your computer if you need it.

Ok, so it looks like I'm stuck with my current directory naming

However, it begs the question, why would you want Legacy 8 after
upgrading to v9. The look and ‘feel’ of v9 is the same as v8 so I
don’t see any reason to preserve v8. I did it so I could go back to
v8 to assist others that had not upgraded. I don’t think that’s
necessary as v9 is basically the same with a few enhanced features
(and a couple of bug fixes!)

After I upgraded to v9 even 99%+ of my settings were the same and my
file even opened up to the last person viewed.

No need to look back!

Sorry Bob, maybe I didn't express myself properly in the original post;
I don't want to look back, I don't want to keep Legacy 8 at all& I'm
happy to move with the times, it's my current directory naming structure
that concerns me.

*Subject:* [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 default install directory naming structure

Hi Listers,

I've just successfully purchased Legacy 9 + the pdf manual & downloaded both.

Before doing the install I did a Check/Repair, found all was well, then did a check of media paths, and found to my surprise a couple of errors, which I've since fixed and double checked.

Yes I've done multiple backups to play it safe, but I haven't as yet installed Legacy 9 !

You see when I view my old Legacy8 directory structure in Windows 7, it all hangs off C:\Legacy8 and of course all the subdirectories flow downwards from this. My question is this: When I do the install, will Legacy 9 install into this same directory ?

What would my best course of action be please ? Should I change the directory name, or just curse my own pedantic nature and wish I'd just chosen C:\Legacy to begin with ?

Thanks
