I don't use the Ancestor and Descendant Interest but they are searchable so they're another way of keeping track of particular groups of people and knowing whether you want to do more research on them or not. You decide whether 0 or 3 indicates most or least interest. You may mark direct ancestors 3 to show you want to do as much research as possible on them but mark the children of your second cousin once removed at 0 descendant interest as you don't want to extend your tree down from them. You may (and I think should where possible) include the parents of spouses who marry in but mark them Ancestor Interest at 0 as you don't want to research their ancestors. You could think of them as quick To-Dos or Research completed indicators - or give them whatever meaning you like. I repeat, they're searchable so you can find everyone with Ancestor Interest set at 2.
