Hi All,

In August of this year, my laptop also went through a Windows 10 Version 1903
for x64-based Systems (KB4512508) update. At that point, I also lost all of
my files. My folders remained however the files contained within were gone.

After many hours/days on the phone/chat, etc. with Microsoft, I finally spoke
to a supervisor who assisted me in and believe it or not followed up on his
call. Unfortunately I did have to restore all of my files from back-up ---
thank goodness for Carbonite! That being said there were settings, etc. which
required updating. The whole process to get back to “normal” was about a week
of my time and many days without use of my laptop.

In discussing the issue with Microsoft, they stated some of their customer were
experiencing this issue. They were uncertain of the cause but felt it might
be related to other software loaded on individual systems. I shared my system
files with Microsoft so they could see if there was a common thread amongst
those suffering this issue.

I wonder……was the common software thread Legacy? Surely hope not…but the
disappearance of my files did occur and it was a frustrating week!

I experienced the same update - mine started last Sunday when I got a notice
that I had an important update needed immediately. I couldn't use the laptop
all week. Every evening when I tried to turn it on I got a message that it was
removing files. I never had an option to stop it. Yesterday afternoon it
finally seemed to be done with the updates. I didn't lose anything from my
desktop. I keep my Legacy files on another system which is interesting because
that computer, along with another one we have on all the time, did not need
these "important" updates. I believe an update did occur to one of those
systems last week because I had to re-enter the password but it started right
up. Nothing on the desktop was affected.

I don't know how you can get the lost info from your desktop back but I'd try
to speak with a knowledgeable Microsoft person (good luck finding someone).
Besides Legacy, I also use other programs as a backup - RootsMagic, Geneanet,
store it in a Cloud, Ancestry, MyHeritage and a very small portion on
FamilySearch. I also backup to a hard drive every so often. I know all of
this redundancy is paranoid but to lose all my years of work would be
devastating to me. I'm so sorry for your loss and hoping that some computer
guru somewhere can be of help to you.

You are not here, so you do not see what actually happened. Yes, the Desktop is
entirely erased, and new icons are put in place. Yes, all the files are
erased....not just moved, or disappeared. I cannot find them anywhere when I
search for them. Other files are moved, but I can usually find them.

I tend to keep Legacy on the Desktop for convenience. That is now gone. So I
don't bother when I do a re-build.
Last week, on Thursday afternoon, it updated when I tried to boot up. There is
no way to stop it! So I spend a couple hours rebuilding everything -- I'm
getting much better at it now! I tend to do a complete backup regularly, but
when I fail to do it, that is when the update happens! I have lost many files.

I had to re-download 105 audio files from the BBC when the latest update
happened. That is because the downloaded files all sit on the Desktop until i
sort them out. I just did them earlier in the afternoon, so didn't have time to
do it yet.

When I then tried to boot up, it updated again! And everything was wiped out
once more! So I spent another couple hours rebuilding it all again. I forget
some files every time, so I do lose things.

I again had to download all 105 files from BBD -- for the THIRD time -- and
this time I put them all in a safe place!! Twice in one day. And again this
Thursday, it updated once more. This time I was more prepared, and didn't have
much on the Desktop. I don't use Legacy anymore, so no problem. It erases the
file every time.

It's annoying, but i am learning how to cope. I have to save up some money, and
will buy a new computer with the pre-Christmas sales. I won't get Windows
again, and apparently I won't be able to use Legacy anymore. That is
alright.... I rarely need it now. Too bac, it was a good program.

I don't read any of the emails from this group, but was cleaning up (meaning
erasing) 244 emails ffrom the LUG, and opened this one. Otherwise, I would miss
many items! I was wondering as I was deleting them.... wonder if there was
anything useful in these; there usually isn't. But i will never know!

I can tell when a file is deleted off my Desktop; you don't.
