Godparents are a very old tradition in Switzerland. More often than not
they were brothers, sisters or cousins of the parents of the child. Many
times the Godfather is from the father's side and the Godmother is from
the mother's side (you must have guessed that one). Recording them helps
to see who else belongs to that family and can help to find a "missing"
child. Also, many times it states where they were living at the time of
the baptism of the child. This is an invaluable source when people start
to move around.
