I have kept all nicknames in quotes and used the AKA where there are variations to the actual name through life circumstances.  Example where the birth is spelled one way and the marriage has a second spelling and the death a third.  Or where a child is born pre wedlock and registered with the mother's surname, but takes the fathers all through life.  I always record the name on the birth record as the main name of the person, no matter what else comes along.  And I have hundreds of examples in my database!
I like the way the reports handle the nicknames.  It personalises everything.

Hi Robert,
The only problem is that if (as I started to do) you only put the
nickname or surname variation in the AKA field, the name appears
as a partial name when the fields are switched from AKA to main.
I am going back and putting in the full or complete name in the AKA
field - as I have time.
