A source is some kind of permanent record that can be photocopied and/or
cited to prove that an event took place. Ideally it is a "third party"
record, made by someone not involved in the event. e.g. a birth is an
event; a birth certificate is a legal document about that event, and is a
source. Same thing with death certificates, wills, probate, land transfers,
etc. The obit is a bit different: the death is the event, the obit is only
a printed notice that the event took place. While not a legal document, it
is widely accepted as proof if the name and date of the publication is
included.
An event leads to a record, but the event is not, in itself, a record
(source). I think you got a bit tangled up in semantics. :>} Virginia
